Vegan Donuts


This morning my children woke up super cranky, so of course I decided it was the perfect day to try  a new recipe. Baking with small children is always a bit of an experience. Thankfully they decided scattering kitchen utensils all over the kitchen was more fun than standing directly underneath me asking when the donuts would be finished every 30 seconds.

This recipe is fairly simple and actually really quick. I simply substituted the egg for 1/4 cup applesauce, butter for earth balance soy butter, and whole milk for soy milk. If you don't have a dairy or egg allergy, then check out the original recipe! Here are the deets,

Donut Ingredients: 

  • Baking spray
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1.5 cups sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • .5 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • .5 teaspoon salt
  • .25 cup applesauce
  • 1.25 cups soy milk
  • 2 tablespoons earth balance soy butter (melted) 
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Icing Ingredients: 

  • 8 tablespoons earth balance soy butter (melted) 
  • .5 cup sugar
  • .5 teaspoon ground cinnamon


  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  2. Grease donut pans
  3. Sift togther all donut dry ingredients
  4. Whisk together all donut wet ingredients
  5. Stir wet into dry ingredients until mixed
  6. Pour mixture into donut pans filling about 75% full
  7. Bake at 350 for 17-18 minutes  
  8. Allow donuts to sit in pan for 5 minutes before removing
  9. While donuts cool, melt butter for frosting
  10. Mix cinnamon and sugar together in separate bowl. 
  11. Coat cooled donuts in melted butter and then dip directly into cinnamon sugar mixture until fully coated
